Between silences
The few times the paintings left home. For many years, the only place to see João’s paintings was his own house. There were exhibitions, yes, but few and far between, with a long silence in the middle.
I. The first outings up to 1996
First shows
Lisbon and Cascais
Group shows in Lisbon and Cascais, including Galeria Artespaço. Drawing and painting at Ar.Co in Lisbon. He started painting in 1975, and long before that he was filling notebooks with drawings.
Switzerland
Allaman, Lausanne, Montreux, Sion
Several months in Switzerland, with shows at the Château d’Allaman (9 to 30 October, in a sale exhibition with works by Miró, Picasso, Magritte, Dalí and others), at Credit Suisse in Lausanne, the Montreux Convention Centre and Grégoire Imbach’s gallery in Sion. These were the years of the surrealist oils.
Solo exhibition
Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon · November
Solo exhibition at the CCB, with an invitation from the Fundação das Descobertas. The painting Tempo is in the CCB collection.

New York
United States
Two and a half months in New York: museums and galleries by day, and at night painting in a painter’s loft. The New York series came out of it.
II. The silence late 1990s to 2022
Three children came along, the beach bar on Praia dos Tomates in the summers, life. Exhibitions stopped being a priority: there was no time, and no wish for galleries and contacts. There were years when he simply didn’t want to know.
But he never stopped painting. He painted in the living room at home, careful not to make a mess, often on his own. There was no social media: anyone who wanted to see the paintings went to his house.

III. The doors open 2023 to today
